Jal Neti Kriya: Steps and Benefits

Jal Neti Kriya is an old yoga practice that helps clean the nasal passages. People in India have been doing this for many years. It is a part of Hatha Yoga, which is a kind of yoga that focuses on physical and mental health. This practice uses a special pot called a Neti pot to wash out the nasal cavity with salty water. By doing this, we can breathe better and stay healthy.

The Importance of Jal Neti Kriya

In today’s world, the air is full of dust and pollution. Our noses and lungs often get filled with these harmful particles. By practicing Jal Neti Kriya regularly, we can keep our nasal passages clean. This not only helps us breathe easily but also protects us from illnesses like colds and allergies. It is not just a preventive measure but also a way to treat various respiratory problems.

Materials Needed for Jal Neti Kriya

Before we start, we need to have the right materials:

  • Neti Pot: This is a small pot with a long spout that fits into the nostril.
  • Lukewarm Water: The water should be warm but not hot, similar to body temperature, to avoid discomfort.
  • Salt: It is best to use non-iodized salt. The amount of salt should be just right so that the solution feels natural and soothing.

Step-by-Step Guide to Jal Neti Kriya

Step 1: Preparing the Saline Solution

First, we need to prepare the saline solution. Take half a teaspoon of non-iodized salt and mix it well in a cup of lukewarm water. Make sure the salt is completely dissolved. This mixture should be similar to the saltiness of our tears, which makes it comfortable for our nasal passages.

Step 2: Positioning Yourself

Next, we need to find the right position. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and lean slightly forward. It is a good idea to do this over a sink so that the water can flow out easily. Keep your mouth open during the process so you can breathe naturally.

Step 3: Inserting the Neti Pot

Now, tilt your head to one side and gently place the spout of the Neti pot into the upper nostril. Make sure it fits snugly so that the water does not leak out.

Step 4: Pouring the Saline Solution

Slowly tilt the Neti pot to let the saline solution flow into your nostril. The water will travel through your nasal cavity and come out of the other nostril. Breathe steadily through your mouth while doing this.

Step 5: Repeating on the Other Side

Once half of the solution has gone through one nostril, repeat the same steps on the other side. This ensures that both nasal passages are cleaned properly.

Step 6: Clearing the Nasal Passages

After rinsing both nostrils, it is important to clear any remaining water and mucus. Gently blow your nose to expel any residual solution and impurities. Do this by alternating between nostrils.
